If you’re sick and tired of going to the same old places on your end-of-year holiday, it’s time for something different. A good holiday should allow us to relax and take in new things but it should also be stimulating enough that it allows us to form long-lasting memories. If you’ve always wanted to see the wonders of nature at work, then you might seriously consider whale watching as part of your next holiday.

Why See the Whales?

Every year, the mighty humpback whales make the long journey from the cold Antarctic waters to the much warmer tropical waters off the coast of Queensland. This means that they swim up the coast of Australia, going past cities such as Sydney. This provides people with an opportunity to see them as they perform their annual migration so that they can calf in warmer waters.

The good news is that if you really want to see this yearly wonder of nature, there are specific whale-watching cruises that can be booked right in Sydney. This means that you can drive up to Sydney from interstate, book a hotel, and cruise out to see and see the mighty humpbacks.

So why else should you go whale watching in Sydney? Consider the following:

  • Nature: If you’re into nature, you should definitely go and see the whales! It happens once a year and you may never have the chance to see them again. Seeing these sorts of things will give you an appreciation of the wonders of nature.
  • Education: It’s especially important to teach our kids about the importance of taking care of our environment. What better way to do this than to take them out on a cruise to see the humpback whales in all of their natural glory?
  • Photography: If you have a super telephoto lens and a good camera, you can really get some great shots of the whales as they breach the water and play.
  • Memories: By seeing the humpback whales, you build some long-lasting memories and have a real holiday that you’ll treasure for many years. It’s an inspirational way to have the kind of holiday that you’ve always dreamed about.

What Should You Expect?

You can never know exactly what the whales will do on a trip such as this but in general, you can expect the following kinds of whale behaviors:

  • Breaching: As the whales come close to the surface, they’ll often breach the water and rise out of it. This affords everyone the opportunity to get some really great photos and see these massive animals doing their thing!
  • Pectoral Slaps: One of the most common whale behaviours is when they rise out of the water and slap down one of their massive pectoral fins. It makes a big splash and a loud noise.

Going to see the annual migration of humpback whales as they make their way up the Australian coast is one of the many wonders of nature. It’s a fantastic way to build great holiday memories and witness nature at work.
